Surfing the blurry border between pop and art performance, R&D has fun in mixing together field recordings, sleazy beats, and explicit lyrics. The duo was formed in 2018 by Emilia Kurylowicz, artist and filmmaker from Poland and Maru Mushtrieva, a writer from Russia. The style of their conceptual band is best defined by lyrics that should be taken with a grain of salt, eclectic sounds, and conceptual props. In 2021 they released their first album "Semi-Famous" that was accompanied by a webseries called "THE SEMI-SHOW"
THE SEMI-SHOW is an absurdist trash TV series where everything happens only half-way. It is accompanying the release of R&D's "SEMI-FAMOUS" EP on the 7th of May, a bold, sex- and body-positive, sometimes explicit and funny sound adventure. The album follows up the adventures in the post-love city, where the desire to be closer is interrupted by imaginary and real obstacles - the story of the emotional rollercoaster of the mysterious socialite and her entourage. Using this character as a point of reference they explore in a playful manner issues such as gender roles, mental health issues, and paradoxes of modern lifestyles.
